What Are the Five Basic Types of Table Setup?
Setting the table correctly can enhance the dining experience and create a sense of occasion. While there are various ways to set a table, there are five basic types of table setups that are used in most formal and informal settings.
1. Informal Table Setup
An informal table setup is the most basic and is perfect for casual dining occasions, such as family meals or brunches. The centerpiece of an informal table setting is a dinner plate with silverware placed to the right and a napkin to the left. A water glass is placed above the knife. If salad will be served, a salad plate is placed to the left of the dinner plate, and a salad fork is added to the left of the dinner fork.
2. Formal Table Setup without Salad Course
A formal table setup without a salad course is slightly more elaborate than an informal setup. The dinner plate is placed in the center with a charger (a decorative plate) underneath. Silverware is placed in the same position as in an informal setup, but additional pieces, such as a fish fork and knife, can be added if needed. A bread plate is placed to the left of the charger, and a bread knife is placed on the bread plate. A soup spoon is placed to the far right of the dinner knife.
3. Formal Table Setup with Salad Course
A formal table setup with a salad course includes a salad plate and salad fork in addition to the items in the formal setup without a salad course. The salad plate is placed to the left of the dinner plate, and the salad fork is placed to the left of the dinner fork. All other items remain in the same position.
4. Buffet Table Setup
A buffet table setup is used when food is served from a buffet table rather than being plated in the kitchen. The buffet table is typically set up with chafing dishes or serving trays to hold the food. Plates and silverware are placed at the beginning of the line, and napkins and glasses are placed at the end. Guests can then serve themselves from the buffet table.
5. Banquet Table Setup
A banquet table setup is used for large events, such as weddings or corporate functions. Banquet tables are typically round or rectangular and are set up in rows. The tablecloths and napkins are often more elaborate than in other table setups. The centerpiece is typically a floral arrangement or other decorative piece. Silverware and glassware are placed in the same position as in a formal table setup.
