How to Make a Round Coffee Table Top
A round coffee table is a staple furniture piece for many living rooms. It is both stylish and functional, providing a place to rest drinks, snacks, and magazines. If you are looking to add a round coffee table to your home, you can either purchase one or make one yourself. Making your own round coffee table top is a relatively easy project that can be completed in a few hours.
Materials:
- 1/2-inch thick plywood or MDF
- 1/4-inch thick plywood or MDF for the trim
- Wood glue
- Clamps
- Brad nails or screws
- Sandpaper
- Paint or stain (optional)
Tools:
- Jigsaw or circular saw
- Drill
- Brad nailer or screw gun
- Sander
Instructions:
- Cut the plywood or MDF into a circle using the jigsaw or circular saw. The diameter of the circle will be the desired diameter of your coffee table top.
- Cut the trim pieces from the 1/4-inch thick plywood or MDF. The trim pieces should be 2 inches wide and the length will be the circumference of the circle.
- Apply wood glue to the edge of the plywood or MDF circle and place the trim pieces around the edge. Clamp the trim pieces in place and allow the glue to dry.
- Reinforce the joints between the trim pieces and the plywood or MDF circle by drilling brad nails or screws through the trim pieces and into the plywood or MDF circle. Be sure to countersink the nails or screws so that they are flush with the surface of the wood.
- Sand the surface of the coffee table top to remove any rough edges or splinters.
- Paint or stain the coffee table top as desired.
- Allow the paint or stain to dry completely.
- Attach the coffee table top to the base of your choice.
Once you have completed these steps, you will have a beautiful and functional round coffee table top that you can enjoy for many years to come. Tips:
- If you do not have a jigsaw or circular saw, you can have the plywood or MDF cut to size at your local home improvement store.
- Be sure to use a sharp blade when cutting the plywood or MDF to prevent tear-out.
- Clamp the trim pieces in place before gluing them to ensure a secure bond.
- Countersink the nails or screws so that they are flush with the surface of the wood to prevent snags.
- Sand the surface of the coffee table top thoroughly to remove any rough edges or splinters.
- Paint or stain the coffee table top as desired to match your décor.
- Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before attaching the coffee table top to the base.
